Scope and Contents

The typescript letter which forms this collection is dated September 7, 1933 and signed by James Truslow Adams. The letter addresses Mrs. Helen G. Williams who had apparently invited Adams to a meeting to be held October 1933. In the letter, Adams declines the invitation citing his work schedule and a forthcoming holiday. Adams notes that he has published seven volumes in four years and his wife and doctors have insisted he take a planned rest.

Adams concludes the letter by telling Mrs. Williams that he finds her "cause" appealing and that he believes in the work she is doing. The identity and work of Mrs. Williams are unknown.

Biographical Note

James Truslow Adams, historian and writer, was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1878. He was educated at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn and Yale University. After a brief business career, he devoted himself to study and writing. He wrote several volumes on American history including The Adams Family (1930), Henry Adams (1933), and The Living Jefferson (1936). He was a contributor to the Encyclopaedia Britannica and the Dictionary of American Biography. Adams died in 1949.
