Scope and Contents

The collection consists of one bound, hand-written album of William Paul Jones. Precise dates cannot be determined from the album. Entries are signed with month (September to February) and day, but the years have been removed. The album pages are printed with small, neoclassical illustrations at the top. It contains messages and poetry written by Jones's friends when he was preparing to begin a life at sea. The album was "dedicated" by Jones's "respected friend," James Reese, who wrote a passage on friendship. A poem written by Joseph Pinkney referred to "a sailor's lonely situation." A final entry bears the initials "S.A.L.," and alludes to the risks of a mariner's life.
