North African and Middle Eastern portrait photographs
Content Description
This collection contains ninety photographs, most portraits, of North African and Middle Eastern people photographed between 1881 and 1910. Men, women, and children are represented, including from Bedouin and Kabyle ethnic groups. The photographs show people both posed and engaging in daily life, working as artisans, merchants, farmers, and herders, and doing housework. Nomadic, rural, and city life are represented. A few photographs of landscapes and buildings are also included. Most photographs were taken in North Africa, particularly in Algeria, Egypt, Sudan, and Tunisia. Other identified countries include Morocco, Turkey, Syria, and, surprisingly, South Africa.
Most photographs show unidentified subjects and were taken by unidentified photographers. The bulk of the photographs with identified photographers were taken by the Adelphoi Zangaki. Three photographs identify their subjects. One shows a man identified as Mohamed Belkassem. Another from Tunisia shows Bey Muhammad III as-Sadiq at the signing of the Treaty of Bardo in 1881. The third shows a woman in Morocco identified only as Zora.
An offline dealer-created inventory of the collection is available.
