Content Description

An album of 50 carte de visite photographs of women actresses, opera singers, and performers, many in costume, photographed by New York and Parisian photographers. Some photographs have been hand-colored. The album was gifted to Henry Rutgers Prime by M. and F. Love. Identified performers include: Adah Isaacs Menken, Clara Louise Kellogg, Emilie Melville, Henrietta Baker Chanfrau, Maude Granger, Nathalie Dumas, Betty Regal, Fannie Partridge, Addie Harland, Rose Massey, Lydia Thompson, Maria M. Fisher, May Robinson, Céline Montaland, Léontine Massin, Adelina Patti, Léonide Leblanc (also known as Mademoiselle Maximum), M. Jolly, and Hortense Schneider. Performers who have been identified with the shows in which they performed include Adah Isaacs Mencken in “Mazeppa,” Celine Montaland in “La Vie Parisienne,” Mlle Delval in “La Biche au Bois,” “Silly” in “Royaume des femmes,” Mariani and Fantine in “Cendrillon,” and Zoe in “Le Refuge Bienvenu.”
