Biographical / Historical

The Johns Hopkins University Collection is an artificial collection. It was made up of manuscript material that was formerly part of the University History Collection which was housed in Special Collections. The University History Collection was begun as a catch-all for documents and manuscripts that related to the University's history. Johns Hopkins did not have a University Archives until 1974 so when archival material relating to the University's history came to the library, it was placed in the University History Collection.

Abstract

The Johns Hopkins University Collection is an artificial collection which acted as a library vertical file for information about the University, but with the advent of the Hamburger Archives this vertical file is no longer necessary.

Arrangement

The collection is divided into three series. Series I is the Vertical File, Series II is the Johns Hopkins Hospital Records and Series III is the Johns Hopkins University Records.

Custodial History

A portion of the collection was transferred from the Charles Rockwell Lanman papers (MS.0196).

Immediate Source of Acquisition

In 1982 the University Archivist surveyed the University History Collection and transferred to the Hamburger Archives all the truly archival materials. A list of the materials transferred from the University History Collection to the Hamburger Archives is available. Those materials that related to the University's history but were not technically archival were left in Special Collections. The non- archival material was largely printed material collected or letters written about the University.

Related Materials

One large portion of the University Archives remained in Special Collections after the 1982 transfer. This is the papers of the University's first president Daniel Coit Gilman. The official records of the University under Gilman's presidency were often so intermingled with Gilman's personal papers that the Gilman papers were left intact and in Special Collections. Nearly all the Gilman papers, his personal, his presidential, and some trustee records are in MS.001: Daniel Coit Gilman papers.
