Derived from dealer description: This collection consists of one padded leather scrapbook with approximately 104 mounted photographs, and related war-time and post-WWII ephemera kept by Robert E. Baker, a Navy sailor of the U.S.S. Pentheus. The photos document scenes on board the Pentheus, tropical landscapes, and sailors' leisure activities. The ephemera include an invitation to a confidential commissioning ceremony at The Bethlehem Steel Company Key Highway Plant in Baltimore, an announcement relating to the G. I. Bill, a request for leave, a subway guide to wartime New York, a dependent identification card for use at Naval dispensaries and hospitals, two rules booklets, military issued currency (Japanese yen and sen), and one military guidebook to the Hawaiian islands. These materials date between 1939 and 1945.

Biographical / Historical

Derived from dealer description: The U.S.S. Pentheus was originally built as a tank landing ship before being converted into a landing craft repair shift and commissioned in Baltimore for use in World War II. It was named for Pentheus, a mythological Greek king. There is currently no information available on Robert E. Baker.
