Biographical / Historical

Notgeld, German for "emergency money," refers to money issued by an institution in a time of economic or political crisis. This currency was produced in Austria and Germany during World War I and the immediate years following, when state-produced money was insufficient due to inflation. At this time the state bank appears to have agreed to allow towns, villages, and municipalities to issue their own money. Notgeld started to be collected as early as 1922, in part because of their colorful illustrations, with printed geometric borders or whimsical illustrations of folktales, landscapes, and local landmarks.
