The Johns Hopkins University collection of Black Americana materials spans from approximately 1870 to the 1950s. The collection consists of postcards, broadsides, and other printed ephemera that depict African American people in ways that are often racist and caricatured. The term "Black Americana" is used to describe such materials which are generally viewed and sold today as collectors' items. This collection aims not to promote or otherwise celebrate these materials, but to use them as teaching tools to critically examine the legacy of racism in the United States and the consequences of racist depictions both at the time the items were created and in their use today.
