Derived from dealer description: This collection contains three chromolithographic trade cards advertising a soap product called “Soapine,” manufactured by the Kendall Manufacturing Company in Providence, Rhode Island in approximately 1880-1884. The cards were designed by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. The first card depicts a man following a woman along train tracks with a train coming up upon him, above the pair is a sign that reads “Look Out For Soapine.” The second card shows a magician touching the hand of a woman, with “soapine” spelled out in stars in the sky above them. The third card shows a man astride a telephone pole with swooping birds spelling out “soapine.” Each card includes an advertisement in black and white text on the reverse, and is labelled “Kendall Mfg. Co. Established 1827. Providence, R.I.” Each measures 3 x 4 1/2 inches.

Biographical / Historical

Charlotte Perkins Gilman, 1860-1935, was an American writer, poet, illustrator, and feminist. Her writings were rediscovered in the 1970s and, to date, her most celebrated work is a short story titled, The Yellow Wallpaper. Her personal life was cause for public backlash during her career after she divorced her husband.
