Ebenezer Emmett Reid papers
Scope and Contents
The collection consists of reprints, extensive student notes, lecture notes, correspondence, and patents of Johns Hopkins professor of chemistry, E. Emmet Reid, dating from 1889 to 1974. Included are two volumes of letters to his parents written from Richmond College, and several chemistry books belonging to Reid. There are also transcripts of tapes on which Dr. Reid recorded recollections of his early childhood, his student years, his career in chemistry, and his government research in chemical warfare.

Biographical Note
E. Emmet Reid was born in Fincastle, Virginia, in 1872. He graduated from Richmond College in 1892. Reid was a student of Ira Remsen at Johns Hopkins, and received his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1898. Reid taught chemistry from 1908 until 1937 when he retired. His university teaching was interrupted when he was recruited to do government research in chemical warfare during World War I. Dr. Reid published Organic Chemistry of Bivalent Sulfur and Chemistry Through the Language Barrier.
