Biographical / Historical

Sophie Gay, born Nichault de la Valette, was a French author. She was born in Paris, France in 1776. Gay was a well-known writer of operas and novels about upper-class French society during the early 19th century. In addition to writing, Gay was a musician, and published songs accompanied by piano. She was the mother of French author Delphine Gay. She died in Paris in 1852.

Alexandre Guirard, born Pierre Marie Jeanne Alexandre Thérèse Guiraud, was a French poet, dramatic author and novelist. He was born in Paris, France in 1788, and was the son of a wealthy cloth merchant. In 1826, Guirard was elected to the Académie française. He died in Paris in 1847.
