Scope and Contents

Collection consists of the research notes, illustrations, and photographs assembled by Haydon for his published work Aeronautics in the Union and Confederate Armies (1941). Other material includes his student notes from Hopkins dating from 1937 to 1940, some teaching notes from the University of Maine, and personal essays and poetry. Materials range in date from 1937 to 1977.

Biographical Note

Frederick Stansbury Haydon was a US Army officer and military historian. He was born in Towson, MD and received his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University in 1936, and his Ph.D. in 1940. He served in both World War II and the Korean War and attained the rank of Colonel. From 1945 to 1947, he taught at the University of Maine, and was later chief of staff of the ROTC at Yale, 1952-1955. He died in Baltimore on September 12, 1992.
