Biographical / Historical

Planning for the celebration commemorating the twenty fifth anniversary began on January 6, 1900 when the Academic Council recommended that the Board of Trustees appoint a date for the anniversary celebration. On December 19, 1900, a preliminary committee met and planned the celebration to take place on October 16 and 17, 1901. On January 7, the permanent committee was established under the chairmanship of President Gilman, and it held its first meeting on February 1. At this meeting J. S. Ames was appointed secretary and two subcommittees were created; one, under Ira Remsen, was to make arrangements for special assemblies to be held in the different departments and the other, under Paul Haupt, was to make official announcements and invitations. Although originally planned for October 1901, the event was deferred until February 22, 1902 to coincide with the farewell speech of President Gilman and the formal inauguration of Remsen, who had acted as president since June 3, 1901. Representatives from more than eighty universities in the United States and Canada attended the celebration, as well as a large number of alumni.
