Scope and Contents

The records of the Survey of the Activities on the Homewood Campus, conducted by the management engineering firm Cresap, McCormick and Paget, consist of one report produced by that firm. The report is dated March 7, 1952 and contains recommendations concerning university organization, budget control, food service, bookstore, libraries, admissions, registration, student aid, student health, plant operation, administrative services, personnel practices, purchasing, accounting, building program, public relations, and the JHU Press. In general, the report emphasizes greater utilization of resources and more efficient services. At the end of the report is a table of the actual funds to be saved through implementation of each of their proposals.

Biographical / Historical

The Board of Trustees established the "Committee to Study the Structure, Organization and Functions of the Board of Trustees and to Consider Possible Amendments to the Charter of the University" under the chairmanship of Howard Bruce, a Trustee of the University from 1947 to 1953. This Committee selected and hired the management engineering firm of Cresap, McCormick and Paget, which studied over twenty-five separate activities on the Homewood Campus and made 115 proposals for their improvement, as well as a financial analysis of the entire program. On March 7, 1952, the firm submitted its report evaluating and making recommendations on various aspects of the University. The Board of Trustees officially received this report at their meeting of April 7, 1952. It was also distributed to President Bronk and a limited number of persons within the University.
