Series IV: The Witches of Eastwick
Scope and Contents note
This series consists of copies of an excerpt from Updike's typescript of the Witches of Eastwick (pages 117-142) with his pencil emendations throughout. The except was published in Playboy Magazine. His alterations include the insertion and substitutuion of words, as well as the deletion of about 30 lines of text. Though the text leaves are duplicates, the annotations are holograph.
There is also a copy of a letter from Updike to "Alice," an editor at Playboy, in which he explains that as she was preparing an excerpt for publication in the magazine, that he was correcting proofs for the novel. "I had just reached this section in correcting the proofs from Knopf," he wrote, "and have given you the tiny benefit of my changes for them."
