Genesis 1:29 restaurant menu, 1970s

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 4

Scope and Contents

This restaurant menu from Cleveland, OH vegetarian restaurant Genesis 1:29 features a fully hand-drawn design with city sights and messages to the customer drawn in the margins. Messages to the customer include: the biblical verse Genesis 1:29 for which the restaurant is named, "Distinguish between a menu and a food," a request to tip their server, "Remember: life is too important to waste time having fun," and a note that food prices have increased and increased prices reflect their higher costs.

The menu features build-your-own sandwiches and salads with some unusual options such as nut bread, cashew butter, apple butter, sunflower seeds, sprouts, and mushrooms. The drink portion includes a small selection of tea and fruit juices, as well as spring water (with a note saying, "Sorry, but we prefer not to serve Cleveland city water.") and items described as "Tigers Milk" and "Frogge Hollow Frog's Milk," the latter of which contained yeast, apple juice, pineapple juice, and spinach. The restaurant also served soup, rice, yogurt, and fruit.
