"People with Strength" pamphlet on the Monroe Defendants, circa 1962
Scope and Contents
A pamphlet describing the violence, fabricated police charges, and legal injustices the Black residents of Monroe, NC experienced between 1961 and 1962, beginning with the police brutality at the Monroe Non-Violent Action Committee's August 17, 1961 picketing of the Monroe Courthouse. At the time of publication, those arrested on these fabricated charges had ongoing cases and the Committee to Aid the Monroe Defendants was raising money for their defense. Much of the pamphlet focuses on the case of local Black civil rights activist Robert Williams.
