Alabaster peep egg of Chatsworth and Matlock, circa 1840

Scope and Contents

This item is an opaque alabaster cylindrical egg-shaped body on a waisted stem, fitted with a glass peephole and twin handles, one of alabaster and one of bone, which rotate a spindle that reveals engraved views of Matlock and Chatsworth through the peephole on top. In addition to the engravings of Matlock and Chatsworth, the rotating interior portion also features a third view which is a diorama with dried flowers and colorful stones. The exterior of the peep egg is painted with a floral design and reads, "A Present from Matlock."
