Scope and Contents note

This series documents Bowman's time in Paris in detail and includes his personal papers, ephemera, some books, and other publications related to the Conference. His papers from this period are organized by subject files regarding people, organizations, logistics, and regions and borders involved or discussed at the meeting. The content of the files usually include records, notes, and correspondence. The ephemera includes various documentary examples of everyday life, from dinner invitations to luggage tags. The papers span from approximately 1914 to approximately 1940, with the bulk of the material spanning 1914 to 1919.

Biographical / Historical

In 1918, Isaiah Bowman was appointed Chief Territorial Specialist of the American delegation to the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. As the American Geographical Society's first director, he had led his organization in supporting the US war effort during World War I. At the conference, he was influential in determining new national boundaries, redrawing the global political map with repercussions that continue to reverberate to the present through conflicts in places such as the Balkans and Ukraine.
