The Great Exhibition: calico handkerchief with poem, 1851

 File — Box: BW-16, Folder: 6

Scope and Contents

Rewritten from dealer description:

This item is a calico souvenir handkerchief adhered to a thin board, printed in black on a pink ground. The central image is a rectangular view of the main exhibition building surrounded by twelve panels, each with an illustration and verse of a poem, "The Crystal House which Albert Built."

The twelve verses begin by identifying the individuals in each image and the verse details their role in the exhibition. For example: "These are the Workmen hearty and strong / Who throng the building all day long." This handkerchief was used as a piece of propaganda by the royal family to portray their role in British society.

The handkerchief was created in 1851, likely in London, and measures 40 × 53 cm.
