Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve (October 23, 1831 – January 9, 1924), was a "classicist and Confederate apologist" (David Lupher and Elizabeth Vandiver, "Yankee She-Men and Octoroon Electra: Basil Lanneau Gildersleeve on Slavery, Race, and Abolition," 320), and one of the first faculty members hired at the founding of Johns Hopkins University in 1876. Abstract
Samuel Grant Oliphant (1864-1936) was a Classics scholar and professor of Greek and Sanskrit who studied at Johns Hopkins University. The collection is formed by 43 notebooks containing the student notes recorded by Samuel Grant Oliphant during his graduate studies at Johns Hopkins University from 1902 to 1907.
