Biography
Psychology was taught from the beginning of the university in 1876 and was originally subordinate to the Department of Philosophy. In 1888, the psychology program was discontinued. It was reinstated in 1903 and combined with philosophy to become the Department of Philosophy and Psychology. In 1908, this department expanded to include Education and became known as the Department of Philosophy, Psychology, and Education. In 1915, the three faculties split and formed their own departments. In 2002, the department changed its name from the Department of Psychology and became the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences.
Dr. Susan Courtney became chair of the department in 2014.
