Scope and Contents

The Peabody Institute photograph collection contains photographic prints, negatives, slides, contact sheets, and postcards related to the Peabody Institute. Images date from the dedication of the Institute in 1866 to 2019, with the bulk of the collection created between approximately 1960 and 2000. Images include portraits (both formal and candid) of faculty, students, administrators, guests, alumni, and musical ensembles. The collection also includes images of graduating classes, commencements, special events of the Conservatory and Preparatory, departments, student ensembles, performances, campus grounds, the Peabody Gallery of Art, and the Mount Vernon neighborhood surrounding the Peabody campus.

Single copies may be made for research purposes. Researchers are responsible for determining any copyright questions. It is not necessary to seek our permission as the owner of the physical work to publish or otherwise use public domain materials that we have made available for use, unless Johns Hopkins University holds the copyright. All requests for permission to publish or perform materials in this collection must be submitted in writing to the archivist of the Arthur Friedheim Library.

Images date from the dedication of the Institute in 1866 to 2019, with the bulk of the collection created between approximately 1960 and 2000.

Arrangement

The collection is arranged in five series. Series 1: People and ensembles Series 2: Conservatory Series 3: Preparatory Series 4: Campus Series 5: Negatives, slides, contact sheets, and postcards

Physical Characteristics and Technical Requirements

Some sets of negatives and other materials may be unprocessed and fragile. Access to these materials may be limited depending on their physical condition.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

This is an artificially assembled collection gathered from numerous sources. The bulk of the photographs were likely transferred by the Peabody Institute's Office of Public Information (later named Communications) and the Peabody Institute Concert Office.

Processing Information

Processed primarily by Elizabeth Schaaf from the 1980s to 2007 and by several archives staff members up to 2016. Rearrangement by Matt Testa in 2019. During this rearrangement, images with no apparent connection to the Peabody Institute were separated from the collection and designated for other collections or for withdrawal. An order was imposed for series 1-4 based on existing topical groupings. Series 1-4 is mostly processed, while series 5 is only partially processed.
