Emmart had a long career with The Baltimore Sun newspaper and its various editions (often colloquially referred to as "The Baltimore Sunpapers") from 1924 to 1972. He served as art critic for "The Sunday Sun," chief of the London bureau of "The Sun," editorial writer, associate editor and editor of "The Evening Sun," and for many years he was in charge of the daily book reviews for "The Evening Sun". Emmart was also a lecturer in the Writing Seminars program at Hopkins from 1946 to 1972. A. D. Emmart died in Baltimore on October 22, 1973.
