Scope and Contents

This bound volume, commissioned by his family in circa 2008, contains reproductions (high-quality scans) and transcriptions of letters from Edward Marshall to his family during World War II, from July 16, 1943 to November 6, 1944. This correspondence was written during Marshall's time in U.S. Army bases and his deployment to the European theater. This volume also includes an Acknowledgement and Afterword written by Marshall's family, as well as a reproduction of a letter from the U.S. government, acknowledging the memory of Marshall's sacrifice.

Biographical / Historical

Edward "Ted" Athelstan Marshall was born Edward Howard Marshall on May 8, 1920 in Baltimore, Maryland. The first of four children born to Julian Howard Marshall and Eleanor Howard Marshall (nee Jones), he attended the Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts for high school. He returned to Baltimore to attend his father's alma mater, Johns Hopkins University, from 1939 to 1943, where he majored in English Literature. Upon commencement, Marshall, who was in the Reserve Officers' Training Corps at Hopkins, joined the U.S. Army infantry the same year. He was killed in combat in Europe on November 10, 1944, attracting fire from an oncoming tank so that his patrol could destroy its tread, when he was struck and killed instantly. Marshall was buried at the Lorraine American Cemetary and Memorial in St. Avold, France.
