Sidney Painter papers

 Collection
Identifier: MS-0033

Scope and Contents

This collection contains research material, writings, and course lecture notes dating from 1902-1960. The research notes and course material are the strongest part of the collection. Much of Painter's research focused on the political and social history of medieval England. Painter compiled information from various primary sources, including pipe rolls and the Domesday Book, to support his work on the Middle Ages. The information Painter abstracted from the sources is primarily in list form. It would be difficult to use the material as a starting point for original research, but it might be used in conjunction with an already well-developed project. Painter taught English and medieval history. The course lecture notes, most in outline form, represent his methodology. The writings series contains only four items, two of which may be chapters from his works: typescripts on Richard III and the Crusades. There is also a typescript of an unpublished short story, set during the reign of King John, which combines fact and fiction.
