The manuscripts in this artificial collection are largely the records of Philadelphia merchants dealing with Baltimoreans in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The items are drafts, invoices, and letters from individuals in Baltimore to Philadelphia merchants especially Andrew Clow & Co. and Dutilh & Wachsmuth. The collection does not have the complete records of these two firms, and there are other firms represented such as William Crammond, Thomas Astley, and John Gill also of Philadelphia and John Hargnett of Ligonier. The earliest and largest number of records (100 items) are those of Andrew Clow & Co. (1785-1793, undated). Many of the manuscripts are from Archibald Campbell apparently Clow's agent in Baltimore. These drafts, invoices, and letters are supplemented by some manuscripts (1796-1800) of Arthur Jones who was the executor for the firm. Many of the records (1790-1799) of the firm of Dutilh & Wachsmuth are in French. There is one later letter (1828) written to Charles Dutilh concerning the collection of a debt. In addition to the merchants' records the collection includes several unrelated items. There is an eulogy on Mrs. Samuel Woolman a Quaker who died in 1773. There is a letter (undated) from William Dorsey to John Purviance concerning property around Windsor Mills. There are three letters from A. Murray Stewart in Annapolis writing to George Fenner about arrangements for Stewart's return. In 1864 Charlotte Davis wrote to her cousins about life in Englishtown. She mentions the recent election of Uncle Abe.
