Frederic C. Lane Venetian account books

 Collection
Identifier: MS-0155

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of two series: microfilms of Italian mercantile records (1416-1535); and a typescript entitled "Translation of Selected Ordinances on Banking". The material reflects Lane's work as a scholar, and provides little biographical information.

The microfilmed records (190 rolls) form the bulk of the collection, and contain information not otherwise available outside Italy. The film was shot in very short reels, so each is only 100- 200 frames long. Viewing the film, therefore, is sometimes difficult. 119 of the rolls are indexed and described by Lane. The rest (71 rolls) are described in less detail on 2 unbound ledger pages.

Biographical Note

Frederic Chapin Lane was born in Lansing, Michgan in 1900. His family soon moved to Massachusetts when his father accepted a position at Tufts University. He grew up in the Boston area, leaving to earn his B.A. at Cornell. He received his M.A. from Tufts, and the Ph.D. from Harvard. In 1928, he joined the history faculty at The Johns Hopkins University.

He taught at Hopkins for 38 years. During his tenure he established the 2 year history survey, and stressed the quality of undergraduate instruction. He retired from the University in May, 1966 to become an emeritus professor.

Lane died on October 14, 1984, in Westminister, Massachusetts, after an extended battle with cancer. He was survived by his daughter, Alfreda Altobellim, and two sons, George M. and Jonathan P. Lane. His wife, Harriet Mirwick Lane, died in 1967.

Lane studied the economic development of renaissance Venice. His numerous books include Venetian Ships and Shipbuilding of the Renaissance, Andrea Barbarigo, a Merchant of Venice, Money and Banking in Medieval and Renaissance Venice, Venice, a Maritime Republic, and Venice and History, a compiliation of his writings, issued by his students and colleagues at his retirement.
