Content Description

This collection consists of approximately one hundred and eighty black and white photographs of the circus kept by Edward Ruppert of Baltimore, as well as printed ephemera related to the circus and a handwritten letter written to Ruppert from a fellow circus collector. A member of the Circus Fans Association of America, Ruppert took some of the photographs himself and collected the others. The bulk of the material dates from 1946-1959, although there is one photograph dated September 1, 1911 and the letter is from 1967. The photographs range in size from approximately 3 x 4.5 inches to 5 x 7 inches, and primarily feature images of circus performers, laborers, animals, and performances.

The Circus Fans Association of America (CFA) was founded in 1926. Their mission is to educate and provide resources about the history of the circus and to support efforts which preserve the circus as a cultural institution in America. The organization also works to oppose legislation directed against the circus. The official magazine of the CFA, The White Tops, was established in 1928 and is published on a bimonthly basis.
