Biographical Note

Ludwig Edelstein was a professor of Classics at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Edelstein was born in Berlin in 1902. He received his Ph.D. in Greek at Heidelberg in 1924 and later taught at the University of Berlin. He came to the United States in 1934 and taught in the History of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University until 1947. Dr. Edelstein taught at the University of Washington and the University of California before returning to Hopkins in 1952 as professor of humanistic studies. He was recognized as an authority on the history of science in Greek and Latin antiquity, and he was particularly interested in the study of Plato and the history of ancient medicine. Lidwig Edelstein died in New York, August 17, 1965.
