Maryland Mutual Insurance Company records

 Collection
Identifier: MS-0115

Scope and Contents

The records include minute books (1862-1879) from both the Maryland Mutual Insurance Company's Board of Directors and the Executive Committee. The financial records (1863-1879) consist of the company's cash book, dividend book, and stock transfer book as well as loose (unsorted) financial papers. Well-documented are the claims (1859-72) filed by ships insured by the company. The claims files include an account of the incident which caused the damage to the ship or cargo as well as receipts for repair work or sale of the damaged cargo.

Among the records of the Maryland Mutual Insurance Company are some from the Baltimore Marine Insurance Company. These date from 1864-68 and are largely policies written by the company. There is also a volume of blank "Certificates of Profits" dated 1864.

There is some information on a third company The Great Western Insurance Company of New York. Copies of the prospectus, charter and policies are included in the files of one claim (1860).
