Scope and Contents

This collection consists of volumes of the student guidebook dating from the 1980s, published by the Graduate Representative Organization of Johns Hopkins University, which was given to students annually as a supplement to the official university-provided orientation. In its first five volumes, this publication was titled Unnatural Resources. Subsequent issues have since been titled "The Hopkins Guide to Living in Baltimore," or "The Hopkins Guide." Additionally, this collection contains correspondence and issues of "Footnotes," a monthly supplementary publication of the Graduate Representative Organization (GRO), intended to be an "alternative newspaper for graduate students."

The collection also includes 3 archived websites from 2015 - Ongoing.

Conditions Governing Access

All student organization records received prior to 2017 are closed for 25 years from the date of creation to everyone except current members of the student organization, after which they are publicly available for access. Materials intended for public dissemination, such as publications, newsletters, and event flyers, are publicly available for access immediately once processed. The Johns Hopkins University Graduate Representative Organization (GRO) was founded in 1978 to advocate for, and represent, the needs of graduate students at Johns Hopkins University - Homewood Division. The GRO coordinates graduate student orientation, advocates for graduate student concerns (e.g., health insurance subsidies, stipends), conducts social events (coffee hours, happy hours, trips), funds campus groups, and organizes sports tournaments.
