Academic Programs, 1879-1987

 Series

Scope and Contents note

Subgroup 1, series 2, Academic Programs, ranges in date from 1879 to 1987, and is dividied into two subseries. Sunseries 1, Subject Files, 1879-1987, consists mostly of curricular materials such as class schedules, syllabi, examinations, faculty and student lists, course descriptions and related correspondence. There is a file of early examinations (1880-1905), which were removed from a scrapbook. The curricular files originally contained carbon copies of grade rosters, which were destroyed because the originals are maintained in the records of the Registrar. Also in this series are records of the Army Specialized Training Unit and Area and Language Study, a specialized curriculum arranged in conjunction with the Army during the Second World War. There are also some more general records relating to history majors, student publications and the effects of the New Plan on the study of history. Records about individual students, such as evaluations or recommendations, have been removed to the Confidential Student Records files at the end of Subgroup 1, Series 6. Subseries 2, Course Records, 1974-1984, is arranged by course number and consists of syllabi, reading lists, and other course records. The material from 1982-1984 was assembled by Dr. Timothy Smith.
