Subseries 3: Washington Office, 1962-1984

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents note

Subseries 3: Washington Office is particularly interesting because it documents Long's extensive record on national issues, 1962-1984. Here are materials on congressional relations, the Democratic National Committee, economic issues, energy, Social Security, campaigns and election results, foreign affairs, military matters, and several files listing Long's voting record. The files listing his voting record (1963-1981) are included in Box 21. The files are arranged by topic. Subject headings assigned by the office have been retained, and dates have been added (where possible) so that issues can be reviewed for a particular year or years. See also Box 22 which contains oversize items filed separately.

Clarence Long perceived himself as a congressman who made significant national contributions. He strongly supported each civil rights bill that came before the Congress, and he worked diligently to reform parts of foreign aid appropriations bills. He often wrote directly to presidents and cabinet officials to express his opinion. Of interest are a series of letters in Box 12 on issues as diverse as trade, oil prices, deregulation, ocean resources, defense contracts, and the plight of Jews in the Soviet Union.

Arranged topically. Boxes 12 - 22.
