Series 1: Office Files

 Series

Scope and Contents note

Long's district office was located in the Post Office Building, Towson, Maryland; the congressional office in the Rayburn Building in Washington. The bulk of the collection is in Series 1: Office Files. Included are files that describe the work of Congressmen Long and his staff during his eleven terms in Congress. Campaigns, trips, political activities, newsletters, correspondence, and research gathered by the staff are documented. Subject headings assigned by Long's staff have been retained, but the items have been artificially arranged to distinguish somewhat the work of the district office and national office in D.C.

It should be noted that when the files were received, there was no clear differentiation between the offices, and there is some overlapping of subject matter in Subseries 2 and 3. For example, when Baltimore County residents contacted Long (1974) regarding a shortage of canning lids and the inferior quality of other canning supplies, Long introduced a resolution (H. Con. Res. 693) to have a study undertaken by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. (See the folders "Canning Lids" in Subseries 2: Towson Office, Box 7 and Subseries 3: Washington Office, Box 16 Folder 48.)
