Jolly Road Farm "Personal Ecology Program" pamphlet, circa 1970
Scope and Contents
This pamphlet, published around 1970 by the Alternatives Foundation, outlines the Jolly Road Farm commune's 35-point Personal Ecology Program for living an environmentalist lifestyle. Focused on both environmental health and human health, the pamphlet includes recommendations to reduce waste, reduce or eliminate use of environmentally unfriendly products, be more energy efficient, stop smoking, eat organic and vegetarian, etc. The program was also concerned about overpopulation.
At the end of the program is a table of additional recommendations that appear to have been added by the Alternatives Foundation, organized into categories of commitment to the cause of environmentalism under the headings, "tokenism," "getting into it," and "getting together." The "tokenism" recommendations involve eliminating common types of waste products, such as disposable diapers and single-use shopping bags, and reducing water use. The "getting into it" recommendations involve everything from buying secondhand clothing to showering in groups and no toilet paper use. This category also included the recommendation, "No pennies. (Gotta start breaking down money somewhere.) Save them for melters, a new occupation soon to be on the scene." The "getting together" recommendations include everything from no plumbing and no lights to drinking your dishwater.
