Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The bulk of the collection is two files of Haines's correspondence dating from 1970 to 1976. The first file (1970- 1973) contains personal letters written by Haines as Director of the Bologna Center. The second file contains letters written in retirement. These letters deal with plans for his retirement and a portrait commissioned by Hopkins. Occasional correspondents include James R. Huntley, Sir Eric Roll, and Howard H. Quint. Other items relating to the Bologna Center include an overview of SAIS (1955), a proposal for an Italian School of International Studies, and an "English-Italian Guide to Labor Relations Terminology" (1956). The personal items in the collection are a copy of Haines's birth certificate, divorce and marriage documents, and an Italian visa. There are also photographs of a ceremony (1972) at the Bologna Center honoring Haines's leadership and the medal presented to him. Only one example of Haines's writing is in the collection. It is the draft of an article written by Haines shortly before his death. It is entitled "The Land and the People" and discusses the uniqueness of America.
