Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

These files consist of the extant records of the AAU from the years pre-dating the Bok Report reorganization. Most pre-date the creation of a central office. These records were created by the voluntary secretary and sent to the AAU permanent office when it was created in the early 1960s. There are significant gaps in the records since many of the early secretaries were no longer living when there was a central office to which to send the records. There are sparse records from the period 1900-1934 and none from 1935-1940 or 1944-47. The records are arranged by secretary until the creation of a salaried executive secretary in 1968.

1900-1934
This group of records contains some correspondence of secretaries Herman V. Ames (1913-1918), David A. Robertson (1919- 21), Henry G. Gale (1923), Alfred H. Lloyd (1924-26), and G. Carl Huber (1927-1929). There is also information on annual conferences, membership, and classification. A list of the file folder headings is in the container list.

1940-43 (E.B. Stouffer)
The work of the AAU between 1940 and 1943 is represented by the files of E. B. Stouffer, Dean of the University of Kansas who served as the AAU secretary. His files date largely from 1940-43, but there is some material from as early as 1936. Stouffer's files contain material on the executive committee, AAU finances, and the annual meetings for 1940-43. There is some information on committee work on classification and graduate education especially the appointment and status of scholars, fellows and assistants. There is material on nominations of members to represent the AAU in other organizations.

1948-1949 (Deane W. Malott)
There are no files for the period 1944-47 and only a small number from 1948-49. These came from Deane W. Malott who was the Chancellor of the University of Kansas and Secretary-Treasurer of the AAU. His files consist of 2 files regarding the newly created Association of Graduate Schools and 2 files of general AAU correspondence.

1949-1951 (Virgil M. Hancher)
From 1949 into 1951 Virgil M. Hancher, President of the University of Iowa served as the Secretary-Treasurer of the AAU. His files are sparse. There is a mimeographed set of AAU meeting minutes (April 1949-October 1954), general correspondence, files on the AGS, the American Council on Education, membership, accreditation, workforce, compensation of staff, and finances. Hancher apparently sent some of his files to his successor Cornelius W. De Kiewiet, and some papers relating to Hancher's tenure can be found in de Kiewiet's files. Hancher served a second term as secretary-treasurer in 1957-59(?) and as president of the AAU in 1959-60 (?). Hancher's papers from these periods are with the 1955-61 section of this series.

1951-1954 (Cornelius W. De Kiewiet)
Cornelius De Kiewiet, President of the University of Rochester succeeded Hancher. De Kiewiet served as secretary-treasurer from late 1951 until 1954. De Kiewiet tended to keep his AAU files chronologically, although there are separate files on academic freedom, meetings with deans, finances, the AAU membership meetings, and joint meetings with the Association of Universities of the British Commonwealth in 1953 and 1954. Mimeographed copies of the AAU minutes during De Kiewiet's term are bound with the earlier ones in Hancher's files (Box 1.15). In 1958 De Kiewiet wrote an article on the state of American higher education. A copy of this is in the 1955-61 files.

1955-1961
The files for the period after De Kiewiet retired in 1954 up to 1961 are mixed, although the position of secretary-treasurer was held by several individuals. Lawrence A. Kimpton, Chancellor of the University of Chicago served from 1955 to 1957, Virgil M. Hancher served a second term from 1957 to 1959(?), the few files from 1960 are from Frederic O. Glover, Executive Assistant to the President, Stanford University, and in 1961 Harlan Hatcher was the secretary-treasurer.

The files from this period deal with related organizations especially the American Council on Education and the National Commission on Accrediting. There are files on a joint tour with the Association of Universities of the British Commonwealth and files on the membership meetings for 1955-61. There are some financial records and a copy of C.W. de Kiewiet's article on the future of American higher education.

1962-1968
Records from the period 1962 to 1968 are especially sparse. They consist of mimeographed copies of the minutes, one file on nominations, one on tenure, and one on the history of the AAU.

1969-1977
This series of files marks the beginning of a paid executive secretary for the AAU. The files consist of the membership meeting minutes and arrangement files, and the agendas and background papers of the executive committee meetings. There is a large file (1972-73) on financial stringency which includes reports from members on plans for dealing with dwindling resources. There are also files (1971-76) on international meetings attended by AAU Executive Secretary Charles V. Kidd, and information on membership and finances.

Information on other AAU activities during this period can be found in the records of the AAU's Council on Federal Relations in Series 4.
