"The South Since Reconstruction," Dr. C. Vann Woodward, Spring 1951

 File — Container: 1

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

This collection contains Hugh Hawkins' two volume typescript of Hawkins' published work Pioneer : a history of the Johns Hopkins University, 1874-1899, and other material, including correspondence and photographs. The volumes were donated to the Lanier Room (former name of the JHU Manuscripts Collection) in 1960 by Hawkins. In the preface to the Lanier room version, Hawkins states: "This is the original version of a book with the same name published by the Cornell University Press in 1960. This excerpt from the published preface explains the difference: 'A typescript version of the study, longer by one third, has been deposited in the Lanier Room of the Johns Hopkins University. In it, the specialist can find further details on almost every subject treated, notably, however, biographical data on the trustees and on Gilman and studies of the library, the public lectures, and financial aid to students."
