Biographical / Historical

Derived from dealer description: The 19th United States Colored Infantry Regiment was organized in 1863 in southern Maryland, drawing volunteers from Benedict, Baltimore, and various counties in southern Maryland and the Eastern Shore. They saw action at the Siege of Petersburg and its capture and the pursuit of Confederate General Robert E. Lee toward Appomattox Court House. The regiment was not present at the court house at Lee’s surrender, however. These muster rolls cover the period February 28, 1865 through April 30, 1865, during which they served in the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, XXV (25th) Corps under the command of Major General Godfrey Weitzel. The XXV (25th) Corps was comprised almost entirely of African American troops, after a reorganization of the Army of the James led its two Corps to be segregated by race.
