Scope and Contents note

From the Series:

Series 1, Student Records, 1939-1960, is subdivided into four subseries: Graduate Students, Undergraduate Students, Special and Non-Degree Students, and Other Student Records. In the first three subseries, there is a folder for each student, arranged in alphabetical order. If a student received both undergraduate and graduate degrees at Hopkins, he or she is filed with the graduate students. Students who received their undergraduate degree at Hopkins, and who began but did not complete the graduate program, are filed with the undergraduates, even if the records in the file are related to the graduate work of the student. A typical undergraduate student's folder contains an index card with basic information and a photograph of the student, a final transcript, and, frequently, letters of reference to graduate schools or potential employers. The graduate students' files contain records from the date the student applied or requested information about Hopkins, to the date the degree was granted. In some cases contact was maintained with the student after graduation. A typical graduate student file contains an application for admission, undergraduate transcripts and letters of reference, correspondence concerning the student's progress, and, after graduation, letters of reference to potential employers or other graduate schools. Special and Non-Degree Students are those who took courses in the department but did not receive a degree. The content of these files varies greatly, some containing only one or two documents, others containing a full dossier. Other Student Records consists of eight files which concern all the students of a particular year or group of years, rather than individual students.
