Scope and Contents
A letter written by Philippe-Antoine Merlin de Douai, Minister of Justice, dated 21st of Prairial, year four of the Republic in the French Republican calendar, and sent in reply to the public prosecutor at the criminal court for the Department of Seine-et-Oise. The public prosecutor had asked whether acquitted defendants can bring an action for damages against their accusers. Merlin replies that yes, the acquitted may charge their accusers with slander and discusses the legal interpretation...
